You Can Apply Mindfulness to Anything
Wait, what? Apply mindfulness to anything? Surely you can’t be serious. That’s a pretty hard-line stance to take, no? Not for me.
If you gave me literally any habit that you were trying to change in some way, whether big or small, I truly believe I could help you gain control of that change through mindfulness. And it’s because of how easy it is to apply mindfulness to anything. The main tenants of mindfulness are nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. So long as you are present in your body, mind, and spirit, and being nonjudgmental, then you are being mindful. Want to gain control of any of your vices? Use mindfulness.
I have a client who uses mindfulness to stay on top of his drinking habits. I have another client who uses mindfulness in his dating life. I’ve had more than one client who has had difficulty gaining control of their video game usage, and we have also used mindfulness. Is there something you are doing on autopilot that you don’t want to do anymore? There is a mindfulness tool for that.
I sound like a broken record, or like that old iPhone commercial where someone is repeating “there’s an app for that”. But believe me when I tell you, there is a mindfulness tool for whatever “that” may be that you want to change.
I go way more into detail about this in my book, Mindfulness Brings Clarity. But the foundation is so simple that I wanted to write about it here. Nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. One of my favorite spiritual gurus, Elkhart Tolle, always says that we are safe in the present moment. And we truly are.
So, keep staying in the present moment with me, staying kind to yourself, and together we can use mindfulness to conquer any changes in our lives.
