Why I Love Astrology
I know what you’re thinking, another mental health professional who loves astrology (there’s a few of us out there). I wanted to take a moment to explain why I love it so much. Does it, too, stem from my childhood trauma? Of course!
When you’re emotionally neglected your entire childhood, it’s hard to have a true sense of identity. It’s also difficult to have an appropriate level of self-esteem. When I learned more about the zodiac signs and astrology in general, I used it as a tool to get to know myself better.
When you’re feeling lost, you will search for answers in any place you can find them. I was definitely looking to know myself better when I would read about the Libra sign (my sun sign). Reading horoscopes also gave me some sense of control, even if it was false or a placebo effect, which it most likely was.
I constantly had a low level of anxiety and was fearful of feeling like I had no control over my environment or circumstances (this was unconscious at the time). Feeling like I had some sort of warning from a horoscope would temporarily quell some anxiety and made me feel like I could prepare for maybe something.
When I was in college and was introduced to the idea of everything having energy in some way, even your thoughts, it certainly boosted my spirituality, but also made me more interested in the energy of the stars and planets, and how we all coexist in the universe. I only learned about natal charts/birth charts a handful of years ago, but it reignited my love of astrology.
I learned my moon sign is Cancer and my rising sign is Leo. I won’t bore you with the details of those, but it helped me understand myself even more in terms of why I am the way I am. I may have felt like my zodiac sign was the end all be all when I was an adolescent, I can admit that. Now I use it as a fun way to explore how I might be feeling at the time. But thankfully, my years in therapy have given me a deeper understanding of myself as well as improved my self-esteem.
The therapy work along with the birth chart analysis has given me a great sense of balance. With Libra’s symbol being the scales, that’s all I can ask for.
